In society today the standard mode of communication is text, Twitter, e-mail, blogs and other web 2.0 tools. As an instuctor it is important to recognize this shift in communication and how are students learn and interact with one another.
Web 2.0 has transformed the internet and has adopted the world of social networking and social capita. Socail networking tools such as Facebook, MySpace, and twitter have changed how people interact. Web 2.0 builds on-line communities while facilitiating communication amoung classmates, peers, colleagues, and friends.
In our Technology Workshops we teach faculty how to integrate tools such as blogging, twitter (micro blogging), wiki's and google docs and spreadsheets into their curriculum. An addition, the univeristy has implemented a GIS initiative which has allowed us to explore and implement additional tools such as Google Earth, Google MyMaps and ARCGIS software.
In one course a Religious Studies faculty member is utilizing Google docs to create definitions relating to religion and beliefs in history. She also utilizing Google spreadsheets to create Timelines to translate religious beliefs and transitions throughout history.
